Dr. Rutherford is a Midwesterner at heart, having been born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, but she has adopted a love for New England through her training in Boston at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, where she received her DMD, and in New York, where she completed a 6-year residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and obtained her MD at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
During her time at Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian she completed a full year of general surgery training with rotations in plastic surgery, otolaryngology, pediatric surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and the surgical ICU. She received intensive adult and pediatric anesthesia training at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. In her final year, she served as chief resident and was selected for the prestigious Osteoscience Foundation Observership award, which afforded her 1-to-1 training with an expert implant surgeon.
While Dr. Rutherford has roots in the Midwest and the Northeast, her passion for service and love of adventure have taken her around the globe. Prior to pursuing dentistry, she earned a bachelor’s degree in biological engineering from the University of Missouri as well as a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of California – Davis, and took her expertise to rural Panama, where she served as a Peace Corps volunteer in water and sanitation for two years and developed fluency in Spanish. She has additionally volunteered for dental missions in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.
Dr. Rutherford enjoys using her engineering background to solve complex challenges in the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. She has particular interest and expertise in dental implant surgery, bone grafting, wisdom tooth removal, dentoalveolar surgery, pathology, and orthognathic surgery, and is eager to use these skills to provide a premier level of care to GOMS patients. She believes every patient deserves compassionate, culturally sensitive, and individualized care, supported by the latest evidenced-based and innovative treatment approaches.
In her free time, Dr. Rutherford enjoys following her favorite sports teams, running, and spending time with her family.
